What is Websense?
Websense is web control software commonly used by schools, universities, libraries, businesses, government offices, etc to control and restrict users' internet browsing. Arguably Websense is a means of imposing censorship on web users; the administrators who use it would simply argue that it is designed to stop abuse or frivolous mis-use of internet access hardware, bandwidth, etc in an academic / business environment. Parents and teachers would see it more from the point of view of stopping kids "wasting time" browsing such popular social sites as Myspace and Bebo. Websense has come under fire from freedom of speech advocates, especially because of instances of governments using it as a tool to attempt to censor the internet. However, websense is just a tool and it is really the administrators and institutions that use it that should be careful about broad-sweeping internet blocks. Users behind firewalls or filters are inevitably going to look for ways to bypass these restrictions. Their motivations may be completely harmless, especially if the administrators have blocked sites from an over-wide range of sites. Methods commonly used to unblock myspace and other restricted sites include browsing internet caches or archives, using HTTP tunnel software, the growing proxy network "Tor", or increasingly, free online proxy browser scripts hosted by proxy sites like Bypass Websense. |
